![]() ![]() In 1977, Hrabowski took a position at Coppin State College in Maryland as a math professor and dean of arts and sciences. After earning his PhD, he remained at the University for a year working as an assistant professor and dean of student services. Director Spike Lee prominently featured Hrabowski in his 1997 historical documentary, “Four Little Girls,” which focused on the deadly Birmingham church bombing and its effect on the nation.Īs the only black student at the University of Illinois, Hrabowski felt compelled to establish a tutoring center for African Americans to increase minority participation in math and science classes. in 1963, and knew one of the young girls killed in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing later that year. ![]() He was arrested for participating in the children’s crusade to protest the jailing of Martin Luther King Jr. ![]() This event is free and open to the public.Ĭonsidered an authority on minority participation and performance in science and math education, Hrabowski was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1950, and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement at a very young age. Entitled “Leadership and the Role of Liberal Arts Colleges in Promoting High Achievement Among Minorities,” Hrabowski’s presentation will be followed by a book signing sponsored by the Carleton Bookstore.
